Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand and is located between Rimutaka Ridge and Cook Strait. With a population of nearly 400,000 people, Wellington is the most populous city in the country. It is also the world’s southernmost city in the sovereign state. Wellington was first founded in the 10th century and the first European settlers arrived in the city in 1839. Wellington replaced Auckland as the capital city of New Zealand in 1841. Today, Wellington is the country’s center of politics, government offices and diplomatic missions. It is also an important center for the country’s theater and film industry.

The sanctuary occupies an area of 225 hectares and is home to some of the nation’s native birds, including Saddleback, Takahe and Stitch Bird. Matiu Island: Also known as Somes Island, this is the perfect destination for travelers looking for a secluded getaway. It is located in Wellington Harbor and offers some of the best views of the surrounding landscapes. Matiu Island was once home to the Maori people during the pre-European era. It served as an internment camp, quarantine station and military station before it was turned into a natural reserve by the Department of Conservation. - Nelson Airport (NSN): Located approximately 80 miles away from Wellington and 3 miles southwest of Nelson, the airport is operated by Nelson Airport Limited and is open for public use. The airport features a single terminal building with nine tarmac gates. There are three grass-dirt runways in the 17/35, 06/24 and 02L/20R directions, and one asphalt runway in the 02R/20L direction.
- Palmerston North International Airport (PMR): Located approximately 90 miles away from Wellington and less than 3.5 miles northeast of Palmerston’s central business district, the airport is owned by the Palmerston North City Council and is open for public use. There is one two-story terminal building as well as a grass runway (07R/25L) and an asphalt runway (07L/25R).
- Wanganui Airport (WAG): Located less than 120 miles away from Wellington and about 2.4 miles away from Wanganui’s city centre, the regional airport offers support and air links for business and private pilots.
