Looking for activities once your private jet arrives in Salvador? Salvador is a must-see destination for several reasons. For starters, it is the birthplace of Brazil and as such, there is a rich Brazilian heritage to be explored here. Below are some attractions that are popular with tourists:
Museo Afro-Brasileiros: For those who looking to understand Brazil’s African roots better, head over to the Afro-Brazilian Museum. The museum showcases artifacts from Central Africa, from where most of the slaves originated in the 19th century as well as artifacts from West Africa where voodoo magic is believed to have originated from. There are also artifacts native to Brazil as well as an exhibit dedicated to the Orishas. The Orishas were deities that slaves paired with catholic to continue practicing their Yoruba traditions.
Sao Francisco Church and Convent:Â Considering the fact that there are more than 360 Catholic churches, it’s hard not to notice the importance of spirituality and religion in Salvador. The Sao Francisco Church and Convent is the oldest in the city, and boasts colonial architecture, gold leaf and well-preserved Baroque art. The courtyard features white and blue hand-painted Portuguese tiles. Most of the ornamentation features in the church appear to be a bit distorted, as they were carved by slaves forced into the Catholic religion and saw this as a way to let out their frustration.
Largo do Pelourinho: Dubbed a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this restored colonial square has got it all. From acrobatic displays of martial arts to dances performed to the beat of drums, there’s always some excitement to be enjoyed here. Tourists are treated to a backdrop of pastel yellow, pink and blue buildings. Those visiting for Carnival may want to explore the Sons of Ghandi, a samba reggae performed by the Olodum and the Ile Aiye. They parade the grounds in their yellow, red, and black garb. There are also thousands of men dressed in turbans who are always singing chants of African origin.
Pierre Verger Gallery: Pierre Verger, who arrived in the city in 1946, was a true admirer of Salvador. He began studying Candomble early on in his life and even went as far as to trace its roots in Africa. The Pierre Verger Gallery showcases Verger’s love for African-Brazilian culture.
