Since 1939, August 19 has been known as National Aviation Day in the U.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt created a Presidential proclamation that this day, the anniversary of Orville Wright’s birthday would be the day when the U.S. celebrates aviation. There is no better way to celebrate the long history of flight in this country than scheduling a private jet charter flight for the 19th of August 2016.
While National Aviation Day is a federal observance, it is not a day when federal employees get a day off. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday. The purpose is to promote interest in aviation among the general population.
How is National Aviation Day Celebrated in the USA?
There are many different ways to go about celebrating the rich history of aviation in the U.S. Many schools, those that are in session during this time, schedule classroom lessons and activities around flight to coincide with the date. Some schools may schedule field trips to museums that celebrate this history of flight or even modern aviation.
NASA recommends visiting a few things to help celebrate the day and the long history of aviation in the U.S. with one or more of the following activities.
- Visit a local science museum. If you are fortunate enough to live near a NASA visitor center that is an excellent choice too. This is especially true for parents with young children who might want to learn more about aviation and flight.
- Watch a movie with an aviation theme. There are so many great movies to consider including: Amelia, The Spirit of St. Louis, Top Gun, Memphis Belle, The Aviator, and Pearl Harbor.
- Build a model plane. Better yet, build a model airplane with your child and spend the day flying the plane together. It is a great bonding experience that you will both appreciate for many years to come.
- Take flying lessons. In addition to dedicated flight schools, many colleges and univeristies offer flight aviation programs.
You can celebrate the advances in flight by scheduling a private aviation flight of your own. The beauty of private jet charters in 2016, above other years, is that it provides the perfect opportunity to avoid long lines at airports. You can skip them altogether in favor of more luxurious and civilized boarding procedures available for private jet passengers as the smaller private jet terminals have efficient and quick security screening procedures that are adequate to the number of fliers that use them.
Some communities have air shows on or around National Aviation Day. You can take the family to watch the shows to see some of the most talented pilots in the U.S. perform acrobatic maneuvers in the air.
However you choose to celebrate national aviation day, it is important to take a little time to acknowledge some of the pioneers in the industry who have made modern flight what it is.
