Popular Destinations in Barcelona
Looking for activities once your private jet arrives in Barcelona? There is a wide variety of sights and sounds in Barcelona, which is known for its architecture as much as it is known for its football club. Here are some of the well known attractions:
PortAventura: This is one of Europe’s most popular theme parks. PortAventura sees around four million visitors each year. Situated a short one-hour drive away from Barcelona city center, the complex includes the theme park itself, as well as four hotels. The theme park features five themed areas, each based on a historic civilization, as well as one based on Sesame Street. One of the rides in the theme park, the Dragon Khan, was formerly the record-holder for being the roller coaster with the most number of inversions.
Park Güell: Park Güell is the brainchild of world-famous architect Antoni Gaudi, and entrepreneur Eusebi Güell. Combining both naturalistic and baroque elements, the park was originally conceived as a municipal housing site, inspired by the Temple of Apollo of Delfos. However, the project was unsuccessful as a housing site, and was thus converted into a public park. Now, visitors to the park can admire Gaudi’s whimsical creations, as well as learn about his life and work from the Gaudi House Museum situated within the premises of the park.
Sagrada Familia: Construction of this iconic church began in 1882, but was never finished. Nevertheless, the building is widely known as the magnum opus of renowned architect Antoni Gaudi. The church was constructed in the Gothic Revival style, a style that is fairly prominent in the architecture of Barcelona in general. Gaudi also combined elements from both the Gothic Revival style, and the Art Nouveau style that characterizes his works.
FC Barcelona Museum: The FC Barcelona Museum is a veritable Mecca for all fans of FC Barcelona. FC Barcelona Museum was inaugurated in 1984 and reopened in 2010 after a long period of renovation. It is the second-most-visited museum in Spain. The museum houses memorabilia from FC Barcelona, and has several interactive sections that allow fans to learn more about the club and its history.
Barcelona Pavilion: In spite of its name, the Barcelona Pavilion was actually originally used as the German Pavilion during the World Expo of 1929. Designed by Mies van der Rohe, the building was avant-garde for its minimalist design, which combined simplicity and the spectacular, as well as the numerous famous pieces of furniture created specially for it. In particular, the Barcelona Chair is well known for its spectacular design.
