Museum of Jewish culture: The Museum of Jewish Culture is an important and serious destination. Historically relevant and eye-opening, the museum features black and white photographs of the area’s synagogue prior to demolition. Possibly the most moving of all the exhibits exhibits (which cover three floors) is that which focuses on the buildings lost during and after World War II. The buildings were owned by the Jewish Community, as either places for prayer or community centers. They remain places of commemoration.

St. Martin’s Cathedral: St. Martin’s Cathedral is surrounded by the moats of the old city of St. Martin. It lies directly next to a busy motorway, but its history is far more extensive than its modest interior would suggest. A total of 12 royals were crowned in this church in the 14th century. These royals include 10 kings and one queen (Queen Maria Teresa).

Bratislava Castle: This fortress was ruined almost beyond repair by a fire in 1811. Reconstruction did not begin until the 1950s and continues today. The reconstructed Bratislava Castle looks down upon the Danube and the old town which inhabits it. A magnificent view of the city is available from the lawns and ramparts of the grounds. Although much of the interior is dedicated to private offices, a Slovakian history museum is available for the public.

UFO (pronounced ew-fo): A modern marvel first created in 1972, The UFO is a bridge that spans the Danube. It offers out-of-this-world sights from its viewing platform. Just below the platform is a restaurant where those looking for a delicious meal can dine.

Bratislava Forest Park: Bring your hiking shoes for the 20-minute uphill walk from the trolley-bus terminal in the Koliba – this brings you to the entrance of the park. For the less able-bodied, there is a cable car, but many prefer the scenic biking and hiking trail. The trail has a superb view, which is oftentimes a reward for those who finish the entire hike. This hilly forest park is marked by the Kamzik TV mast. It’s here where visitors can take a break with a little food and drink at the onsite restaurant.

Apponyi Palace: Possibly not what one would expect from a 1761 palace, this attraction is different. Apponyi Palace allows visitors to explore the cellar in a way that teaches them about the area’s winemaking heritage. Those wishing to explore further can also peruse the castle’s individual rooms, many of which are complete with period-appropriate furnishings. For non-Slovakian speaking visitors, there is an interactive English language audio provided as well.

Hviedzoslavovo Namestie: Anchoring the pedestrian zone’s southern extremity, along the tree-lined plaza, visitors will find bars, restaurants, and embassies. Stealing the show, however is the Slovak National Theater. This theater was built in 1886, and is located at the east end of the street. The Slovak Philharmonic is also nearby. It is located in the neo-baroque Reduta Palace from 1914.
