About Maui, Hawaii
There is no shortage of islands in the Central Pacific, but Maui is special in its own regard. A Hawaiian specialty, Maui offers travelers 30 miles of luxurious beaches. With the third highest population in all the Hawaiian Islands (second only to the actual island of Hawaii and O’ahu), Maui populates its 727.2 square miles with more than 144,445 residents. Tourism and agriculture define Maui’s economy with pineapple, sugar, tropical flowers, papaya, macadamia, and coffee being the chief exports. More than a decade ago, the domestic arrivals to this island numbered over 2 million in one year.
Popular Destinations in Maui
Looking for activities once your private jet arrives in Maui? Pools, waterfalls, volcanoes, and other wondrous sights await visitors who venture to this tropical island getaway. Tourists will find no shortage of things to do, including the activities and attractions listed below:
Big Beach: Makena State Park prides itself on this horseshoe-shaped beach. Its turquoise waters and golden sands stretch a mile long. Kite surfing/kite boarding, boogie boarding, surfing, windsurfing, and snorkeling are ideal for everyone on calm days, but experienced swimmers can venture out whenever the urge strikes, so long as they are cautious. Regardless, lifeguards are always on duty here. It’s important to note, however, that drinking water is not offered on site.
Back in the 60s, a tent was erected to house an encampment for alternative lifestyles – the beach was nicknamed ‘Hippie Beach’ but the tent was torn down in 1972 during a police eviction. Hikers that make their way up to the rocky outcrop which divides Little Beach and Big Beach will experience a magnificent, sweeping view of the shore.
Whalers Village Museum: This could well be the only chance most individuals will ever have to see a life-size whaling ship up close and personal. The experience is particularly eye-opening for tourists and locals alike. The time period between 1825 and 1860 is referred to as The Golden Age of Whaling in Maui. This is because ships traveling between the Arctic and Japan would stop here to restock before returning to their New England home. The true depths of whaling history are represented by interpretive plaques, harpoons, ships logs, and authentic period photographs in this fascinating, albeit small museum.
Fleetwood’s on Front Street: Famed drummer Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac owns this establishment. The rooftop oasis features ornate accents, cushy lounges, and comfy pillows while offering the best view of the West Maui mountains and the Pacific. Get ready for the bagpipe serenade and tiki lighting ceremony at the sound of the conch shell blast signaling sunset. Following the ceremony, live music kicks up the atmosphere. Happy Hour is from 2 PM to 5 PM; if visitors see a red flay flying atop the bar, it’s a sure sign that Mick Fleetwood is on the island.
Ma’alaea General Store and Café: Enjoy the signature Ruben sandwich while sitting on the porch, or shop for what you need at the friendly general store. Red-hot hot dogs for two dollars, gluten-free and veggie solutions, freshly baked bread, and the expected deli eats are offered here.
